Van Gogh wrote about this painting in his letters to Gauguin, calling it very romantic. After parting with Gauguin (they were working together at Norman village), Van Gogh’s works changed. In his new style, simple paintings of landscapes were filled with vibration, making viewers feel inexplicable anxiety. The moon is in eclipse, the sun is not in the sky, and the one thing that is providing light is a single star. This very melancholic picture might be the image of Van Gogh’s state of mind. A few months later, he took his own life.
