Perspective I: Madame Recamier by David
oil on canvas • 60 x 80 cm
During the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Surrealist painter René Magritte made a series of "Perspective" paintings based on well-known works by the French artists in which he substituted coffins for the figures represented in the original paintings. The composition is almost identical to David's portrait published in DailyArt yesterday. Whether you like it or not, Magritte's specific sense of humour endeared him to fans.
