Gustave Caillebotte and his brother, photographer Martial Caillebotte, were both very interested in balconies and the artistic opportunities these offered. They frequently painted and photographed people standing in beautiful ornate balconies, watching the world go by in the wide boulevards below. His paintings capture the early days of the transformation of Paris to a more modern city.

Sometimes they set up their easel or camera on a balcony, to capture images and effects from
that elevation. In fact; Gustave Caillebotte was very proficient in the use of plunging perspectives.
