The Milkmaid

oil on canvas • 45.5 × 41 cm
  • Johannes Vermeer - 1632 - December 1675 Johannes Vermeer 1657–1658

The Milkmaid is typical for Vermeer - he often depicted unnamed girls in domestic spaces, with an extreme sense of detail (even Dali was obsessed with the detail of his other painting, The Lacemaker). You really need some skills to paint on a canvas like little Dutch tiles at the bottom right (45 x 41 cm). For at least two centuries before the painting was created, milkmaids and kitchen maids had a reputation as being predisposed to love or sex; however, Vermeer's painting does not make that association seem intentional.
