Guercino (a nickname meaning "the squinter", originally Giovanni Francesco Barbieri), was an Italian painter of the Bolognese school. He was probably the first Italian artist to create works that can be called fully baroque in the stylistic sense of the term. He was self-taught but developed precociously. His frescoes freshly exploited the illusionistic ceiling, making a profound impact on 17th-century Baroque decoration.
