Dürer was a painter that produced a lot of self-portraits. He painted this portrait just before his 29th birthday. It is the last of his three self-portraits. The portrait is most remarkable because of its resemblance to many earlier representations of Christ. The hair, beard, and characteristic hand gesture are typical for the religious iconography – it may have been an attempt to acknowledge his talent as God-given.
