Nimue was a character from the Arthurian legend, known also as the Lady of the Lake. She was the one who gave King Arthur his sword Excalibur, enchanted Merlin, and raised Lancelot after the death of his father. Burne-Jones had strong interest in the Arthurian legends. He painted several paintings on the subject and designed the sets and the costumes for drama "King Arthur".
