Édouard Manet (please don't confuse this Realism-Impressionist painter with his friend Claude Monet, who was strictly an Impressionist) was fascinated by the Spanish culture and art. This painting is a copy, in a way, of The Majas at the Balcony, by Francisco Goya. The sitting woman is a friend, Berthe Morisot, who was Manet's sister-in-law and an artist in her own right.
