Sir George Clausen RA was an English artist working in oil, watercolour, etching, mezzotint, dry point and occasionally lithographs. Born in London in 1852, the son of a decorative artist, he achieved great success attending design classes from 1867-1873 in South Kensington at the National Art Training School (later becoming the Royal College of Art). Influenced to a certain extent by the impressionists with whom he shared the view that light is the real subject of landscape art, he became one of the foremost modern painters of both landscape and peasant life, being elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1895 and in 1906 a full Academician, he was knighted in 1927. His pictures excel in rendering the appearance of things under speckled outdoor sunlight, or in the shady shelter of a barn or stable.
