Jacques and Berthe Lipchitz

oil on canvas • 81 × 54 cm
  • Amedeo Modigliani - 12 July 1884 - 24 January 1920 Amedeo Modigliani 1916

The portrait depicts Jacques Lipchitz, a French sculptor of Jewish origin, with his wife, Berthe. Modigliani became known for his modern style of paintings and sculptures, characterized by mask-like faces and the elongation of form, both shown here. Lipchitz was a close friend of Modigliani. When the painter died of tuberculosis, Lipchitz crafted his death mask.
