Musical Angel is a fragment of a lost altarpiece which probably depicted the Madonna and Child with saints. Rosso was one of the principal exponents of early 16th-century painting in Florence; both he and Pontormo were students of Andrea del Sarto. He brought Florentine Mannerism to France, where he was called by King Francis I to fresco the palace at Fontainebleau.
