The Starry Night
oil on canvas • 73 x 92 cm
Van Gogh is famous of thick application of paint - his paintings are extremely difficult to maintain, the layers of paint after a hundred years are so fragile that it easily detaches itself. The painting shows the view from the window of a room in a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Remy, where the painter lived from May 1889. Starry Night, unlike the most paintings of Van Gogh, was painted not from nature, but entirely from memory and through the imagination of the author.
