175 years ago, Paul Cézanne, whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavour to a radically different world of art in the 20th century, was born in Aix-en-Provence. Pablo Picasso said that Cézanne "is the father of us all". All his life the artist made intense studies of his subjects, in search of ideal forms. He wanted to "deal with nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone”, which led him to simplification of the composition and flattening the perspective.

Happy Birthday Paul Cézanne!
