The Eiffel Tower

This little masterpiece is one of my favorite Seurat's paintings. His use of color, light, and space is just extraordinary. What’s even more incredible is the size of the painting. To paint a picture so small would have been unheard of in the 18th century when paintings reached room-sized proportions to reflect their grandeur. The small size does not render The Eiffel Tower any less important however; in fact, I would argue that its smallness creates a more personal connection between the painting and the viewer because one must stand close to the painting in order to clearly see the image. It is almost as if Seurat painted a post-card of the tower.
