The Lady in White is one of Titian's most graceful portraits, but also one of his most mysterious. Her identity is unknown: Is she Titian's daughter Lavinia or an illegitimate child? Is he depicting his mistress or an ideal of female beauty? Is the Lady's dress a wedding gown? What symbolism does the fan in her hand embody? Who wears such jewelry? There are many questions here that force us to look deeply and to which, we may never, find the answers.
