This painting was the last major work completed by French painter Édouard Manet before his death in 1883. It depicts a scene in the Folies Bergère nightclub in Paris. Edouard Manet was born exactly 181 years ago, on 23 January 1832. Throughout his life he engendered great controversy and served as a rallying point for the young painters who would create Impressionism.
