Girl on a Bridge in a Wind

Colour woodblock print on paper •
  • Suzuki Harunobu - c. 1725 - July 7, 1770 Suzuki Harunobu 1769

Harunobu’s prints are very specific depictions of intimacy. He became famous as an innovator of colour woodblock prints, but his compositions confirm that he possessed not only technical acumen but also a great artistic talent.

The series Fūryū rokkasen refers to the so-called six immortal poets, which include Funya no Yasuhide (d. ca. 885), a court official and poet of the Heian period (794–1185). One of his admired waka poems was transposed by Harunobu into a print that shows a young girl on a bridge as she resists a strong autumn wind. The composition is particularly impressive for its dynamism and the artistic means used to convey the difficulty with which the frail girl makes her way through the wind.
