  • Berthe Morisot - January 14, 1841 - March 2, 1895 Berthe Morisot 1885–86

We continue our special month with The Clark's collection with this amazing painting of Berthe Morisot, who was one of the leading painters of the French Impressionists. We hope you enjoy it!  (By the way, if you would like to know more about her and the Impressionist movement itself, please check out our online course!)

Morisot used a light palette and long, broad brushstrokes to record this seemingly spontaneous, private moment. The young woman is actually a family friend who often posed for the artist. She is shown here raising her arms to tie her hair, unselfconscious despite her state of partial undress. Although the painting was widely praised when it was exhibited at the final Impressionist exhibition in 1886, it remained unsold and was eventually acquired by the artist’s friend Claude Monet.

P.S. Here you will find five Impressionist gossips that will make you feel like they staged a soap opera!  :-D
