Happy New Year!!!

We have a long tradition of publishing paintings of sleeping girls on January 1st. They were always meant to wish you some proper resting after wild New Year's Eve parties. Probably it won't be the case today, but look at this beautiful painting!

It was painted by the unknown master, close in style to the French painter Claude Vignon, enlivened not only by the beautiful girl's face but also the still life details done with painterly virtuosity.

Baroque theories on art regarded genre pictures, which drew their subject matters from everyday life, as inferior to paintings with Biblical or mythological subjects that rendered sophisticated ideas. We do not know if the painter of this particular picture intended to add some moralizing, symbolic sense to his work or not; from the smile in sleep we can conclude that this is a very early rendition of the romantic theme of the amorous girl's dream. But you know, maybe she is just resting.  ; )

If you decide to stay in bed all day, check our bed stories, the comfiest genre scenes in paintings here! <3

Have a great weekend everyone! And a great year as well.  : )
