Grand Manan Island, Bay of Fundy

oil on canvas • 21 13/16 x 31 15/16 in.
  • Frederic Edwin Church - May 4, 1826 - April 7, 1900 Frederic Edwin Church 1852

An avid traveler and artist-explorer, the American painter Frederic Church made his first trip to the coast of Maine in 1850. The allure of the dramatic coastline and natural terrain lured him back to the area repeatedly over the next 30 years. In search of even more remote scenery, in the summers of 1850 and 1851 he sailed to the island of Grand Manan, an island in Canada, located 20 miles offshore of the easternmost point of Maine.

Dramatically lit by the setting sun, with shadows cast by the clouds in the upper sky, Church’s finished painting of this wilderness site is characterized by rough forms, broken surfaces, and jagged contours. A lone fisherman stands apart from the scene, bathing in the glow of the sunlight illuminating the spectacular vista behind him.

We present this beautiful painting thanks to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT, USA.
