Hornsgatan by Night

oil on canvas • 152 x 182 cm
  • Eugène Jansson - 18 March 1862 - 15 June 1915 Eugène Jansson 1902

Eugène Jansson was a landscape artist who painted city views. He is most famous for his nocturnal views in deep-blue shades, where the streetlights blend with other elements of the urban scene in a way that makes familiar places seem foreign and new. In Hornsgatan by Night, the gaslights create swirls and waves along the empty Stockholm street. The painting may remind us of other famous starry nights, including the ones painted by Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch (check them out in our Archive). With its atmosphere, this masterpiece seemed perfect for the nearly last day of 2021.  :)

We present today's painting thanks to the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.

P.S. Here you can see the most beautiful nocturnal paintings in art.  <3
