Zhang Shanzi was a Chinese painter known for his depictions of tigers amid atmospheric landscapes. Born in 1882 in Neijiang, China, Shanzi was the elder brother of the painter Zhang Daqian. During his teenage years, he mainly learned painting from his mother. In his early career, he went eastward to Japan and became a member of the Tongmenghui (Chinese United League). He returned to China in 1907 and established the Dafengtang School of Painting with Zhang Daqian; he also founded the Lanman Society. He remained active in revolutionary movements and served as a member on the presidential consultative committee after the founding of the Republic of China. He died in 1940.
