Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861–1919) is praised for her portraits of women in everyday situations. In her time, however, this type of artwork was considered extremely modern and even controversial. The interest in the subject reflected Danielson-Gambogi’s own exploration of women’s role in society and her increasing awareness of limitations that women face. Her attitude and lifestyle—being ambitious, independent, serious about her career, enjoying life, and travelling as an unmarried woman—was considered unconventional in her time.

Mother depicts a mother sitting on the side of the bed, breastfeeding her baby. The model was Danielson-Gambogi’s sister. The woman's back is turned towards the light peeking through the window. This subtle play of light and shade is present in more of the artist’s paintings alongside slightly faded, soft colors. The painting shows an everyday moment from a mother's life, illustrating her bond with the baby in a delicate way. In Danielson-Gambogi’s times, when the depiction of breastfeeding aroused aggravation, this idyllic scene was considered inappropriate.

The painting belongs to Finnish National Gallery; we present it thanks to Europeana.
