Late Night Snack

oil on canvas • 40.6 x 56 cm
  • Albert Francis King - 1854 - 1945 Albert Francis King c. 1900

Albert Francis King was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was recognized as Pittsburgh’s primary still life painter during the 19th century. King was largely self-taught, and he is best known for his still lifes. This painting stands out for its uncanny realism and for its emotional moodiness, created by contrasting appealing items of food and drink against a dark setting that evokes darkness and solitude. Although there were times when King's paintings were considered outdated, today the artist is recognized for his skill and for continuing the tradition of American still life painting from the early 19th century, often with updated subject matter.

This unexpected painting is one of the masterpieces featured in our 2023 DailyArt Desk Calendar. We are emphasizing this because our beautiful calendars (the desk one, wall one, and the daily planner) are now on pre-sale, which means you can get them for -25%. As we didn't print a lot of them this year, we don't have many of them in stock, so be quick! You can find them in our DailyArt Shop here.  :)
