Giovanna Garzoni was an Italian painter of the Baroque period who specialized in still life paintings and miniatures. She was also one of the most accomplished botanical artists of the 17th century. Apparently her first commissioned work (from a pharmacist) was a Herbarium when she was 16 years of age. Today we present a painting created in the style of still-life painting she perfected, gouache on vellum, which was characterized by brilliant colors and was able to convey nuances of texture and form. Garzoni carefully composed her paintings, often with a strong decorative sensibility, and featuring a fascinating combination of native flora and fauna along with exotic additions that allude to the wealth and horticultural skills of her Medici patrons.
Beautiful isn't it?

P.S. There were more Baroque female painters than you think. Meet Marietta Robusti, the talented daughter of the famed artist Jacopo Tintoretto.
