Today in Western Christian countries it's Saint Nicholas Day. It recognizes the 3rd-century saint who became an inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus. In many countries on this day, children (and adults!) receive tiny gifts or sweets.
Sweets like the ones depicted by Josefa de Óbidos!!!
De Óbidos was a Spanish-born Portuguese painter. All of her work was executed in Portugal, her father's native country, where she lived from the age of four. Approximately 150 works of art have been attributed to Josefa de Óbidos, making her one of the most prolific Baroque artists in Portugal. In this composition, the artist displayed a large set of objects—boxes, a jug, a clay jar, a dishwashing cup, a tray and a tin cup—along with a variety of confectionery, sweets (yay!), flowers, and sticks with floral ornaments. Fabrics sumptuously fill the background. The descriptive and ornamental richness of the painting verified in the workshop of Óbidos, was immensely enjoyed by the clientele.
P.S. Meet the artist who created the Santa Claus we all know today. <3
