In my opinion, Édouard Manet was one of the fathers of modern European painting. Although he was a 19th-century artist, his artworks still rock today. It is incredible how he used his talent to transform non-living objects like fruits, flowers, clouds, food, and artifacts from Realism to Impressionism. In the painting we present today, Manet wanted to bring life to the otherwise lifeless lemon. Like many other Manet’s still-life compositions, it recalls 17th-century Dutch models. The directness of execution, bold brushwork, and immediacy of vision displayed in the canvas, however, suggest why the public found Manet’s work so unorthodox and confrontational.

P.S. Other Manet's still lifes are present in our Food & Drinks in Art 50 Postcard Set!  :)
