Indian Woman with Marigold

oil on canvas • 67.95 × 56.52 cm
  • Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez - 20 May 1824 - 4 April 1904 Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez 1876

Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez was one of Mexico’s foremost academic painters known primarily for portraits, but also known for his travel writings and art criticism. This portrait of an indigenous woman wearing a huipil (native blouse) and holding a marigold is emblematic of the artist’s ability to capture a fleeting moment and the spirit of the sitter.

Gutiérrez was a restless artist; he traveled incessantly in Mexico, the United States, South America, and Europe. His influence and connection with artists in the many cities he visited (including San Francisco and New York) remains important, but is a quite unknown chapter of his life.

P.S. Frida Kahlo is the most famous Mexican artist. In her art she often combined Mexican mythology, with Christian symbolism and her own dreams.
