Landscape in the Jura Mountains near Romanel

Oil on paper-board • 32.0 x 49.5 cm
  • Félix Vallotton - December 28, 1865 - December 29, 1925 Félix Vallotton 1900

Félix Vallotton visited his birthplace, Lausanne, in the summer of 1900 together with his fellow artist Édouard Vuillard. During his sojourn Vallotton painted more than thirty landscapes which later became known as "decorative landscapes". In these small-format works the artist compacted fields, mountains and sky to areas of colour which he allowed to collide directly with each other. Vallotton was less interested in the individual character of the landscape than in the interplay of colours and forms on the canvas, whose two-dimensional decorative style here still very much shows the influence of the Nabis.

We present today's work thanks to Städel Museum :)
