A Woman Pulling Giant Aubergines From a Tree

Today we present something a bit unexpected—a watercolor that shows a woman pulling giant aubergines from a tree. Not much is known about this illustration, only that it was created in the school of painting based in Kalighat, a small district in Calcutta named for the celebrated Hindu goddess Kali. Kalighat painting originated from the folk art tradition of rural Bengal but its origin is a matter of debate and speculation among art critics and historians, for there exists no historical account that records a specific date, or traces the beginnings of this school. The artworks presented various subjects, from religious imagery of Hindu gods, goddesses (which you can see here), and stories to natural history, social types, and proverbs. The range of materials used in drawing are pencil, watercolor, Indian ink, and silver paint.

And today we have a woman with giant aubergines. Enjoy!
