In the summer of 1888, Van Gogh, who was then living in Arles, made a trip to the small Mediterranean fishing village of Saintes-Maries de la Mer, where he made a painted view of this street with its thatched roofs and smoking chimneys. Before painting, Van Gogh's created a drawing that was one of fifteen he created in July alone and sent to his friend in Brittany, the artist Émile Bernard, to keep him up to date on the work he was doing. The colors of the buildings and the surrounding are not real; they were added later in the studio, and by their juiciness Van Gogh wanted to show his optimism and positive vibe (which he had at the time). And as we know, Van Gogh loved to depict nature in his paintings.
