This exquisite painting by Sandro Botticelli is a testament to the artist's remarkable prowess in portraiture. Renowned as a "giant among portraitists", Botticelli's reputation in this genre was formidable, though only a few of his portraits have endured the test of time.

The young man portrayed is a study in grace and poise, with his golden hair framing delicate features—expressive eyes, finely sculpted face, strong brow, high cheekbones, distinctive nose, dimpled chin, slender neck, and rosy, pursed lips exuding self-assuredness. His mauve doublet complements his complexion, and its nuanced shades define his elegant figure. The young man exudes an arresting presence, engaging the viewer directly. His face reveals a rich tapestry of emotions from confident propriety to inner knowing, approachable warmth, and intellectual grandeur. The sitter presents one of the picture’s most striking features: a roundel of a bearded saint with his right hand raised. This small gold-ground painting, which dates to 14th-century Siena, is a separate work of art altogether.

Sandro Botticelli is undoubtedly one of the most important painters of all time. His works are of course featured in our Italian Renaissance 50 Postcards Set, along with other amazing Italian Renaissance artists. Check it out in our DailyArt Shop!
