Love of Winter

Oil on canvas • 81.6 × 101.6 cm
  • George Bellows - August 1882 - January 8, 1925 George Bellows 1914

In January 1914, George Bellows, an American realist painter known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City, wrote a letter to a friend expressing, "There has been none of my beloved snow. I must always paint the snow at least once a year." Shortly after, on February 13, a significant blizzard swept through New York City, inspiring the artist's creation, Love of Winter. In this piece, Bellows employed vibrant reds, yellows, and greens to amplify the wintry landscape, while employing broad, sweeping brushstrokes to depict the sense of motion, wind, and speed. The dynamic gathering of skaters and spectators, representing individuals from various age groups and social strata, mirrors the diverse communities that embraced the city's public parks and the recreational pursuits they offered during the early 20th century in New York City.
