Sleigh Ride

Oil on canvas • 35.7 x 51 cm
  • Unknown Artist Unknown Artist c. 1890–1895

Traces etched upon the snowy canvas, delicately imbued with hints of blue and pink, guide our gaze toward a sleigh on the brink of vanishing over the crest of a hill. Within the sleigh, its occupants—one bathed in the soft glow of yellow moonlight, the other adorned with a vibrant red scarf—appear nearly incidental amid the serene magnificence of the scenery. This unattributed miniature masterpiece lingered within the studio of Winslow Homer (who was one of the foremost painters of 19th-century America) until his passing, conceivably never destined for public display.

Beautiful, isn't it?
