Hello March!

We start the month with this fantastic portrait by an Italian Mannerism master, Lavinia Fontana. There is no coincidence that we are publishing this stunning work today ... with it we want to start our Women's History Month celebrations! Enjoy!  :)

This is one of Lavinia Fontana's finest portraits. It shows Bianca degli Utili, wife of the nobleman Pierino Maselli, with six of her children. The text of an epigraph formerly on her tomb in the church of San Lorenzo Damaso in Rome revealed a surprising amount about her: she died in September 1605 at the age of 37 after giving birth to her 19th child. The portrait is remarkable for its meticulous attention to the detail of the different hairstyles, the embroidered costumes, and the varied psychological portrayal of so many characters.

It is one of my favorite portraits in all art history; I hope you will love it too!

Lavinia Fontana's work is featured in our Women Artists 50 Postcards Set! If you like this masterpiece, be sure to check out our Shop - we've prepared a special -25% promo for the occasion of Women's History Month :) You don't want to miss it!
