Even the best moments in life (like a Christmas celebration full of presents!) can be a bit tiring. The Polish symbolist painter Wojciech Weiss depicted such a moment perfectly in the painting we present today. At Christmas captures the intimate scene, with a little boy sitting in a chair in front of a Christmas tree. The tree is decorated in a typical Polish way (with paper chains) and with a traditional Krakow szopka (Nativity scene) in front. The boy seems to be very sleepy. Did he overeat? Did he have too much excitement at the Christmas dinner? A hundred years after the creation of this scene, and even though we are probably older than this boy, we all know such feelings, a mix of happiness and lack of energy. Weiss’s characteristic use of light and shadow creates a warm, almost dreamlike glow, giving this scene a sense of eternity.
