Grandma's Fan

Oil on canvas • 72 x 59 cm
  • Virginie Géo-Rémy - 23 April 1846 - 26 December 1924 Virginie Géo-Rémy 1887

In this painting, we see a young blond woman in a low-cut green dress, seated and seen from behind, holding in her right hand an open fan, whose rich ornamentation she considers, while with her left hand she secures a tortoiseshell comb in the twist of her hair.

Virginie Géo-Rémy, who created this painting, was a French painter and pastel artist. We do not know much about her artistic life; she won local artistic competitions and her pastels and portraits were present at local exhibitions. In 1904, she was appointed professor of drawing at the regional school of fine arts in Nantes, where she taught visual perspective and ornament in the young girls' section. She retired in 1923 for health reasons. She didn't have a massive career. But March is Women's History Month and we want to show you relatively forgotten women artists; we hope you like this charming painting.

The work of women artists, forgotten by the official canon of art history, is very close to our hearts. We want to put the names of great women artists in the proper spotlight and that's why we have a selection of various items featuring works of women artists in our DailyArt Shop :) Now you can get them with a 25% discount!
