Still Life with Fruit

Oil on canvas • 69.9 x 57.8 cm
  • Jan van Os - February 23, 1744 - February 7, 1808 Jan van Os 1769

This painting is a great example of the Dutch style of painting flowers and fruits. Jan van Os was a painter and a member of the renowned Van Os family of artists; he was the father of artists Pieter van Os, Maria Margaretha van Os, and Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os, and grandfather to the painter Pieter Frederik van Os.

Jan van Os was inspired by famous Dutch artists before him, like Jan Brueghel the Elder, Ambrosius Bosschaert, and Jan van Huysum. This painting shows tiny details like insects, snails, and drops of water very clearly. The flowers and fruits in the painting couldn't actually be found together in nature. Van Os made up these beautiful scenes by combining different watercolor studies of each flower and fruit he painted throughout the seasons.

Lovely, isn't it? Have a great Thursday!
