Large Green Vase with Mixed Flowers

Pastel on paper • 74.3 x 62.2 cm
  • Odilon Redon - April 20, 1840 - July 6, 1916) Odilon Redon 1910-1912

While Odilon Redon primarily focused on monochromatic art until his mid-fifties, in his later years he evolved into a daring and inventive user of color. His works frequently explored eerie and otherworldly themes, and in this instance, he transforms a traditional still-life into something almost ethereal. The vase seems to hover in an indeterminate space, its colors surpassing the vibrancy of natural hues. Utilizing pastels, Redon brought out deep colors, enhancing their energy through the strategic placement of complementary shades (yellow against purple, green opposite red), making the flowers appear almost luminous.

Beautiful, aren't they?
