Today is the last day of our special month with the Alte Pinakothek and Neue Pinakothek collections. We end this partnership with this stunning piece of French Impressionism; take a deep dive into it, and enjoy!

The painting is based on the color triad of blue, green, and pink. It dates from around 1914 to 1917. Monet had already moved to the village of Giverny in Normandy in April 1883, where he bought a house in 1890 and created the famous water lily pond. It provided Monet with motifs for numerous works, including the Munich painting. In his Nymphéas, the painter drew compositionally and coloristically on Japonism, which had already played a decisive role in the emergence of French Impressionism. Form and space are interpreted as a surface, but this surface is not only transparent, it also reflects forms that lie outside the picture frame in the form of the water reflection, so that it takes on an undefined multidimensionality.
