Have you ever heard of Anna Cassel? Probably not ... but more likely you have heard about Hilma af Klint, the Swedish artist who, a couple of years ago, was announced as the first Abstract artist. Since then, her works have been exhibited around the world.
Anna Cassel, her friend, was also a painter who has been primarily noted for her landscape paintings. She was part of The Five and collaborated both spiritually and artistically with af Klint. The depth of their collaboration is now fully revealed, however, as Cassel's occult paintings have been recently discovered. They are smaller in size than Hilma af Klint’s grandest works, but still ... very, very similar.
According to scholars, Hilma af Klint was always surrounded by spiritual seekers, including artists, throughout her life. Cassel contributed to some of the works in af Klint’s most important series, the so-called Temple series. Af Klint openly acknowledged that the paintings for the Temple were created in collaboration with a group of other women, and she aspired to realize the concept of the temple itself together with Cassel.
