Klimt was a central figure in the Vienna Secession movement, which sought to break away from traditional academic art in favor of a more modern, symbolist approach. His art is renowned for its intricate detail, use of gold leaf, and bold erotic themes, which pushed the boundaries of early 20th-century decorum and paved the way for modernist expressions in visual art.

During the summer of 1914, Gustav Klimt spent his vacation in Weissenbach, a quaint village on the Attersee's southeastern shore in Austria's Salzkammergut lake district. He stayed at the forester's house, which he painted twice that year. In these paintings, Klimt delighted in the contrast between the open and closed windows, which provided intriguing glimpses inside the house and beyond. The building's facade was draped in a lush veil of ivy. The painting's predominantly green palette was enlivened by bursts of color from the blooming flowers in the garden and the window boxes. For Klimt, this engagement with the natural world was a refuge from the pressures of everyday life and the demands of his clients, offering him a profound sense of renewal and peace.
