  • Paul Cézanne - January 19, 1839 - October 22, 1906 Paul Cézanne c. 1890

In the 1880s, Cézanne focused extensively on still lifes, creating over 170 paintings in this genre. He worked with a consistent set of elements—a wooden table, a tablecloth, fruits, and a ginger jar—rearranging them to explore new formal and painterly solutions. Notably, in one composition, he introduced a lush bunch of wildflowers, including daisies, carnations, and poppies, for the first time. This piece, rich in decorative detail, maintains a simplicity of character and formal rigor. The opulent right-hand side of the image is balanced by a dark background and a cool, white tablecloth.

Cézanne’s constant rearrangements were his way of trying to grasp and understand the objects. He preferred the diffuse light of the studio over bright daylight to emphasize the physicality of the objects. The objects in Cézanne’s still-lifes, whether for daily use, artificial, or natural, are detached from their normal function. His still lifes reflect his recognition of the laws governing the world and his effort to portray its complexity.
