Suzanne Valadon was the first woman admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Before gaining recognition as an artist herself, she modeled for renowned artists like Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, appearing in some of their most famous works. Valadon taught herself to paint by closely observing the techniques of the artists in Montmartre, where she posed. She is best known for her vibrant and colorful still lifes, nudes, and landscapes, often defined by bold black lines that outline her figures and objects.

Known for her rebellious and passionate personality, Valadon had numerous affairs with the artists for whom she modeled. At 18, she became pregnant with her son, Maurice Utrillo, whose father's identity remains uncertain. Maurice later became a painter, taking the name of Suzanne's friend Miguel Utrillo, who acknowledged paternity when Maurice was eight years old. Throughout his career, Maurice signed his paintings "Maurice Utrillo V." with the "V" standing for "Valadon" as a tribute to his mother.
