Water Lilies

Oil on canvas • 73.3 x 101 cm
  • Claude Monet - 14 November 1840 - 5 December 1926 Claude Monet c. 1897-1899

This painting, along with the seven others from Monet’s first Water Lilies series, varies in format, size, color, and technique as Monet explored the vast pictorial possibilities of this new motif. Immersing the viewer in a shimmering aquatic world, Water Lilies is a sublime example from this groundbreaking series, representing Monet’s early engagement with the theme that would come to define his work in the 20th century. A defining and radical aspect of this painting is the elimination of the horizon line, a feature that draws the viewer directly into the heart of the pond. By omitting peripheral details, Monet focuses entirely on the ever-changing interplay between water, atmosphere, and light, capturing the way the pond’s surface transformed with each moment. These qualities became central to every phase of Monet’s Water Lilies series and profoundly influenced subsequent generations of artists.

The painting is among the first devoted to that subject that Monet painted. After he died in 1926, the work stayed in his family for a number of years. It then ended up in a private collection.
