The Quiet Room

Oil on canvas • 60.8 x 50.8 cm
  • George Clausen - April 18, 1852 - November 22, 1944 George Clausen 1928

In today's painting, George Clausen captures a moment of tranquility in a spacious, light-filled interior. The setting is likely an affluent home in St John’s Wood near Regent’s Park in London. A solitary woman, seated and seemingly writing, occupies the scene. Opposite the seated woman, a vase of wild tulips introduces an element of contrast. While flower arranging is often about achieving harmony through careful composition of color and form, these tulips appear unrestrained, their chaotic growth reaching in various directions. This contrasts sharply with the woman's calm, focused posture, perhaps hinting at her inner thoughts.

George Clausen was an esteemed English artist who trained in Paris under the academic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau, who was influenced by Johannes Vermeer. He was a founding member of the New English Art Club. He held prominent positions, including Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy (1904–1906) and Master of the Art Workers’ Guild (1909). Knighted the year before painting The Quiet Room, this work represents a return to themes familiar in his oeuvre over the previous two decades.
