Rachel Ruysch was one of the most famous Dutch still-life painters. She was celebrated for her extremely detailed and elaborate floral compositions, which gained her international acclaim and made her the best-documented female artist of the Dutch Golden Age.

Ruysch’s floral arrangements were not direct representations of nature, but carefully curated creations. She painted each petal and leaf with remarkable precision, using delicate brushstrokes and subtly adjusting colors to achieve harmony and balance across the canvas. In many ways, her approach can be seen as an early form of visual editing, enhancing reality to craft the most ideal and aesthetically pleasing image.

Over her long career, Ruysch produced a rich body of work that included numerous floral still lifes, a few fruit pieces, and several evocative "forest floor" scenes, like the one we present today, which made me very, very hungry. So, of course, her works are also present in both of our Flowers in Art and Food & Drinks postcard sets.
