Barbara Regina Dietzsch (1706–1783) was a virtuoso painter of botanical subjects who lived and worked in 18th-century Nuremberg. Trained by her father, Johann Israel Dietzsch, she and her six siblings all became artists, many specializing in natural history watercolor. The Dietzsch family played a significant role in Nuremberg’s thriving industry of scientific image production, closely tied to collections of naturalia and the city’s university. Among them, Barbara Regina stood out: contemporaries such as physician and collector Christoph Jacob Trew hailed her as one of the finest watercolorists of the era.

This drawing showcases her amazing style—technical precision combined with animated composition. Gum arabic glazing and delicate layers of gouache, applied with feathery brushstrokes, capture the waxy texture and vibrant coloration of the flower. The insects enhance the sense of liveliness and are depicted with enough specificity to identify the species.

Set against a rich black ground—a signature of Dietzsch’s work—the tulip and its companions gleam with heightened color and dramatic lighting effects. Executed on vellum and bordered on three sides with what appears to be gold, the drawing likely once belonged to an album designed to combine scientific description with aesthetic delight.
