No artist captured the character and emotional condition of mid-century American life more incisively than Edward Hopper. His singular, often solitary vision remained steadfastly realist at a moment when many of his contemporaries were turning toward abstraction.

The painting we present today glows with tones of golden yellow and fiery orange, depicting a classic Cape Cod sunset. Hopper’s mastery is evident in the subtle interplay of light and shadow: the landscape is suffused with the warmth of the setting sun, while a solitary structure—perhaps a house or farmhouse—is cast into shadow. This contrast heightens the sense of isolation.

Reflecting on his creative process, Hopper wrote, “I spend many days usually before I find a subject that I like well enough to do, and spend a long time on the proportions of the canvas, so that it will do for the design, as nearly as possible what I wish it to do.”
