Maria Dulębianka was a Polish artist. Unable to gain admittance to the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts because she was a woman, Dulębianka went on to further her studies at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and the Académie Julian in Paris. Later she actively painted portraits, family scenes, and depictions of social environments. Her work is characterized by precision and emotional depth, and her portraits not only capture physical appearance but also seek to convey the character and inner world of the people portrayed. Only a small part of her artistic legacy has survived to this day.

From 1890 onward, she lived abroad with the famous Polish writer, Maria Konopnicka; whenever personal circumstances forced them to separate, Dulębianka made every effort to reunite as quickly as possible. Over the years, Dulębianka became increasingly vocal in advocating for women’s equality. She published the sharp polemic, Female Preachers, which can be summed up by the phrase: “men explain the world to me.” She also called for equal access to artistic education.

P.S. Many important women artists had to battle prejudice and work hard to gain equal recognition with men. Meet five feminist artists who changed the world!
